Banner Elk Winery is the North Carolina High Country's first commercial winery. The winery not only offers wine for sale but wine tasting and educational tours which include instruction in the various steps and processes on how wine is made. The winery was built on a 20 acre working blueberry farm which has been recognized as the premier blueberry farm in North Carolina. Vintner Dick Wolfe has already used the local berries to create the first blueberry wine and blueberry port. That wine has already received recognition and has become a trademark of the Winery. Along with the blueberries Wolfe has planted vineyards that will begin producing grapes as early as next season. In the meantime he will rely on grapes from other growers and from his existing vineyards near Abingdon, Va.
